Remember when many people were afraid to shop online? No longer. ComScore
reported in late December that for the first 47 days of the November-December
holiday shopping season, $27.46 billion in business was conducted online, a 12%
spike vs. the same period a year previous. From Dec. 11 to 17 alone, spending
reached roughly $5.51 billion, a 14% increase from the year before. Spending for the
week got a huge boost from the so-called Green Monday (Dec. 13), on which $954
million was spent, and Free Shipping Day (Dec. 17), which 1,500-plus merchants
took part in and generated another $942 million in business. Compared to Dec. 17,
2009, spending jumped a remarkable 61%, ComScore reported.
